Herkimer, NY has a diverse population. Herkimer also has its own village school system. Quality-of-life is excellent here. Access to major highways is only minutes away. Herkimer is less than 30 minutes away from the Utica, NY train station and several bus lines travel through the village.

Some attractive features of our village are:

  • Home to Herkimer County Community College, which was ranked by CNNMoney as one of the top 100 community colleges in the nation.

  • World famous for its 'Herkimer Diamonds' which are special quartz crystals that are unique to the area. Treasured by custom jewelry makers as they are naturally diamond-like with their geometric shapes and clarity.

  • Named after General Nicholas Herkimer (Herchheimer), militia leader during the Battle of Oriskany during the American Revolutionary War.

  • The Presidential train that took the body of Abraham Lincoln during the journey to Springfield, Il. passed through Herkimer during the evening of Wednesday, April 26th, 1865. This was the same route the President took from Springfield to Washington for his inauguration as President, only in reverse. Throughout the night, citizens lined the route to pay their respects, carrying torches and burning large bonfires. Legend has it that each April, a ghost train carrying the Presidents body and other apparitions silently rolls through the village along the famed route.

  • The 1939 movie "Drums Along The Mohawk", staring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford was set in Fort Dayton, which later became the village.

  • Chick Vennera, a broadway & film actor, who co-starred along with such great actors as Richard Gere, Vanessa Redgrave, and Robert Redford in movies like 'Yanks' and 'The Milagro Beanfield War' and is famous for his car-dancing scene in 'Thank God It's Friday' and is a Herkimer native.

  • Feature several village buildings listed on the National Regsiter of Historic Places.

  • The Theodore Dreiser novel, 'An American Tragedy', is based on the death of Grace Brown in 1906 and subsequent murder trial of Chester Gillette, which was held at the Herkimer Court House. In 1951, it was adapted for the big screen and released as A Place In The Sun, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.

  • Has a population of approximately 315,000 people within 30 miles of Herkimer, 1.24 million people within 60 miles.

  • Resides at Exit 30 of the NYS Thruway System (Interstate 90).

  • State Routes 5,5s,and 28 all pass through or near the village.

  • The county seat of Herkimer County.

  • <20 minutes from Utica, NY, 60 minutes from Syracuse, NY, 90 minutes from Albany, NY, and 2.5 hours from Rochester, NY.

Herkimer Diamond Mines
Approx. 8 miles away

World-famous 'Herkimer Diamonds'. Found at the Herkimer Diamond Mines Resort facility just outside of Herkimer in nearby Middleville, NY. On-site camping is available across the road at the KOA Campgrounds.

Ace of Diamonds Mine & Campground is also just up the road a bit and features additional prospecting and camping!

General Herkimer Home
Approx. 10 miles away

General Herkimer Home. Home of the Revolutionary War hero, General Nicholas Herchheimer (Herkimer). The Herkimer Home site is open mid-May through October, Weds-Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sundays 1-5 PM from Memorial Day to Labor Day. On Sunday afternoons, staff in period costume demonstrate household and farm activities.

Herkimer County Fair

The Herkimer County Fair presently sits on 26 acres and now has 10 permanent buildings as well a permanent bathroom and shower facility, a horse corral and 1850-seat aluminum bleacher seating area surrounding the event show ring. A fan-favorite is the Demolition Derby. Presently the Fair attendance exceeds 60,000 during its 6-day run.

The Fairgrounds is the home of several events including the Great American Irishfest held at the end of July, The New York State Trappers Convention held at the end of August and the New York State Good Sam Samboree in the beginning of July. Other events include hamfests, rabbit shows, motor home rallies and various music festivals.

Mudville is Perry Novak’s own personal field of dreams – five softball fields constructed mostly by his two hands in his own backyard, which happens to be in the shadow of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. With more than 3,000 high-school athletes competing every year, the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS) Softball Festival is the largest sporting event in the state.
